How To Commission

Commission A Custom Portrait

A custom commissioned portrait possesses the remarkable ability to stand as a lasting and indelible reminder of pivotal life events or beloved individuals whose presence resonates deeply within us.

These portraits frequently bear the weight of not only familial ties but also cultural and historical significance, preserving the richness of our heritage and the stories of our past for generations to come.

When these moments are captured through the eyes of a skilled, professional artist, you embark on a journey that goes far beyond the mere depiction of imagery; it is an immersive voyage into the realm of artistic interpretation where each brushstroke and nuanced detail is thoughtfully curated to resonate in a profoundly personal and meaningful manner that serves as a long-term investment and appreciates in value over time.

As your chosen portrait artist, it is both my honor and joy to transform the intricacies and elements of the subject matter shared with me into a masterpiece that will narrate a captivating story-one that unfolds with every gaze and resonates deeply within the hearts, minds, and spirits of all who behold these works.

I am truly thankful and blessed with the opportunity to create Art De La Soul.

Portrait Sizes

Each project presents its own considerations.

The choice of portrait format size depends on several factors, primarily dictated by the reference image. The composition may call for different dimensions based on the subject's expression, the desired space around them, or their pose.

For Pastel Portraits, I typically work with two standard sizes. The Carre (Square) format, measuring approximately 19 x 19 inches, is well-suited for Head and Shoulders compositions. Meanwhile, the Standard Classic size, at 19 x 25 inches, is typically employed for half-body portraits. In the case of full-body portraits, the larger standard size I use is 29.5 x 42 inches. If you have specific size requirements beyond these standards, please inform me in advance, and I will accommodate your request accordingly.

When it comes to Oil Portrait paintings, the size options are more extensive and diverse. The common standard size starts 25 x 32 inches. However, I am flexible and can adapt to your preferred dimensions.

If you believe your portrait would benefit from a specific or non-standard size, please communicate your preferences, and I will make the necessary adjustments to ensure your artwork meets your expectations. Likewise, if I believe that your picture would be better suited to a different size, I will discuss this with you in advance to ensure your satisfaction.

Photograph Considerations & Guidelines

The quality of the photo is of utmost importance as it serves as my primary guide and sole reference throughout the portrait creation process.

When selecting pictures for your portrait, there are several key considerations to keep in mind. While many individuals can capture impressive images with their smartphones today, professional photos are often the preferred choice.

If you can enlist a professional photographer, you're already halfway there!

In any case, here are some helpful tips:

Choose Photos with Meaning

Opt for photos that hold a special significance to you. Remember that the most genuine smile or direct gaze into the camera isn't always necessary for a great portrait.

Focus on Expression, Eyes, Pose, and Lighting

A good portrait stems from the qualities of the photo itself. The subject's expression, the depth in their eyes, their pose, and the quality of lighting all play pivotal roles.

Avoid Small or Blurry Images

Ensure that the selected photos are neither too small nor out of focus, as these factors can impact the quality of the final portrait.

Background Consideration

Don't worry about the background in the photo, as it can be altered during the portrait creation process.

Larger Image Sizes Are Preferred

Generally, the larger the image size, the better, as it allows for greater detail and precision in the portrait.

If you are considering commissioning a portrait by me, I invite you to share your selected photos and project details using the form below.

For a portrait that perfectly aligns with your expectations, please provide as much detail as possible. If necessary, we can arrange a phone call or an in-person meeting to facilitate the process and provide an even greater level of clarity for the both of us.
